# Open Cenote
This is the most popular type of cenote, and occurs when the limestone roof above the subterranean water chamber collapses entirely, leaving a fully exposed water fixture.

## Closed Cenote
This type of cenote is entirely or almost entirely closed to the sky. Typically requires artificial light to see inside, but occasionally there are small cracks where shafts of light can shine through.
## Semi-Open Cenote
These cenotes have a small opening, allowing some light through.
