## Background
Izamal is a city about 1.5 hours east of [[Mérida]] by car. Named a *Pueblo Mágico* in 2002, it is known as the Yellow City as most of its colonial buildings are painted the same shade of yellow – likely inspired by the color of the [[San Antonio de Padua Convent]], which in turn is said to have taken its yellow from the flag of the Vatican.
Izamal bills itself as a city of three cultures: Maya, Colonial, and modern Mexican.
## Review
Very pretty city surrounding a plateau topped by the [[San Antonio de Padua Convent]]. Great for a day trip from Mérida.
Has a really good restaurant for local cuisine called [[Kinich Izamal]].
[[Kinich Kakmó (Izamal)]] is a large pyramid within Izamal with a nice view of the [[San Antonio de Padua Convent]].
